Block Captain Bulletin - Sept. 2, 2014
Hello 2014 Hope Lights Lives Block Captains! In response to several requests for block captains to be better informed throughout the luminary season, we’ve created the Block Captain Bulletin – a forum chock full of updates, information and tips from your fellow volunteers! As this is a work in progress, we welcome your feedback about what works, what doesn’t and what you would like to see in future issues.
2014 Luminary Lighting Night Date and Details
This year’s suggested lighting night will be Saturday, 12/13/14. That’s right, this year’s lighting will be held on a Saturday in order to avoid many of your Sunday evening conflicts! You’ll also notice that this year, we have a suggested lighting night – several of you indicated that you prefer to light your luminaries as a neighborhood on a different night (either during a neighborhood holiday pageant, Christmas Eve, New Years, etc…). If that’s what works for you, we encourage you to make that choice! For those of you who prefer to light on the community-wide lighting night, you still have that option as well.
Updated Block Captain Timeline
Several volunteers and luminary night participants have told us that our luminary order forms go out too early in the year – in response to this concern, we’ll be asking block captains to distribute information to their neighbors later this year. While in years past we’ve distributed the information in October, this year we’ll distribute in early November. This also means that we’ll be getting you the order forms at the end of October. Stay tuned for specific dates and a full timeline!
Tips from fellow Block Captains – Neighborhood Parties!
“Our neighborhood always has the best participation when we coordinate a holiday potluck for all of our neighbors on luminary lighting night. Even if we do something simple like hot chocolate (and hot toddies for the grown-ups!) and little treats in one of our driveways to share as we walk the street and admire the lights, we always have a great turnout! When I’m distributing my luminary order forms to each neighbor, I’ll also include a simple invitation inviting everyone to participate. It’s a great way to support a wonderful cause, meet new neighbors, and enjoy the holiday spirit!”
