Family Centers’ board member Terri Walker and staff member Tania Recinos were recognized as “Family Champions” by the Connecticut Council of Family Service Agencies (CCFSA) for their outstanding commitment to improving the lives of families.
At a ceremony held at the Lawn Club in New Haven on June 5, the CCFSA honored Walker, Recinos and 28 other human services professionals and volunteers whose unselfish actions have strengthened families in Connecticut.
Since joining Family Centers’ Board of Directors in 2003, Walker has shown an unyielding dedication to improving the lives of children and families living in lower Fairfield County. During her tenure on the Board, Walker has been a major force behind the planning and execution of the agency’s special events. She served as co-chair of two Family Centers’ annual benefits, which have collectively over $1 million to the support the agency’s health, human service and education programs. She has also co-chaired three successful luncheon fundraisers to benefit the bereavement and critical illness support offered by Family Centers’ Center for HOPE and The Den for Grieving Kids programs.
On the programmatic front, Walker has served on numerous committees to help guide and improve the service delivery of Family Centers’ programs that help families coping with crisis situations. She has also co-chaired the organization’s Special Events Committee.
Recinos has been employed at Family Centers since October 2015 as the Outreach Worker in the Parents as Co-Educators program, and has been a crucial ingredient in the success of the program. During the program’s launch three years ago, Recinos threw herself into the recruitment process, and immediately began establishing trust with the families that she enrolled.
Recinos quickly recognized the need for great flexibility to engage with her families and happily provided home visits during all hours of the work day, and on weekends.
Recinos has been a strong advocate for her families while also empowering them to learn how to navigate on their own. She also helped organize enrichment events for the Co-Ed families that were always held during the weekend.
