Parents as Co-Educators Renewed for Phase II
Following a successful pilot phase, the Parents as Co-Educators (Co-Ed) program has been renewed for an additional three years. A collaborative between Family Centers, Children’s Learning Centers (CLC) of Fairfield County, Building One Community and the Vita Health & Wellness District, the Co-Ed program aims to close the Opportunity Gap in Stamford through parental support and education services.
Funding for Phase II of the Co-Ed program was generously provided by the Grossman Family Foundation, Singer Foundation, Ruth Brown Foundation and the Goodnow Foundation. Currently, $450,000 of the $550,000 to fully fund the program has been pledged.
In its first three years, the Co-Ed program has made incredible strides in helping preschool-aged children from primarily immigrant families living on the West Side of Stamford rise to the educational levels of their more affluent peers. With the program’s guidance, the 20 families enrolled in the Co-Ed program closed a 24% gap in kindergarten readiness at the end of the three-year period.
Phase II of the program will open up these important services to a new crop of preschool students. Additionally, the Co-Ed program will continue to track student achievement of the Phase I cohort through high school, and will add the Phase II students to its data pool once they enter Kindergarten.
