Westhill's School Based Health Center to Help Students ‘Fuel Up' in March
Students involved in Westhill High School's Go Healthy Early Nutrition Club will take steps to ensure kids are properly "fueled up" for the upcoming Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT).
In celebration of National Nutrition Month, the Go Healthy Early Club - a student group advised by Family Centers' School Based Health Center, Westhill's physical education department and Chartwells that is dedicated to improving the health and wellness of Westhill High School's students - will offer breakfast bags to those taking CAPT tests on the mornings of March 6 and 8.
Since studies have shown that students' academic performances improve when they eat a healthy breakfast, each bag will contain a balance of fruits, whole grains and dairy products. With the help of Chartwells, Stamford Public Schools' food service provider, the Go Healthy Early Club chose food that is both low in fat and satisfying.
Food and supplies for the breakfast bags are funded by a grant from the National Football League and National Dairy Council's Fuel Up to Play 60 program. As part of this grant, the Go Healthy Early Club also purchased exercise equipment and challenged each Westhill student to regularly utilize the school's Fitness Center three times each week. To encourage students to participate, prizes are awarded for every 12 visits. The students with the highest participation are also entered into a raffle for a gift certificate to a local sporting goods store.
Operated by Family Centers, the School Based Health Centers (SBHC) are located in six middle and high schools in Stamford and provide medical assessments, physicals, screenings, dental care, mental health counseling and other services to more than 1,150 students each year. Each SBHC is licensed by the State of Connecticut, and are staffed by nurse practitioners, social workers and dental professionals that specialize in child/adolescent health.
